We started Phone Janitor with a pretty singular goal for ourselves: have a number we could give out everywhere and not get calls we don't want from it. We still have that, but our customers have weighed in and we've made it so much more now.
Often times making a thing you want is a great thing to do. Stopping there seems to be the more common thing. Maybe you made that shelf for the closet to help you organize your favorite things. Maybe you made some wooden toys for your kids.
With Phone Janitor obviously our creativity was much more technical, but it's the same drive. Thing is, sometimes you make something and when others find out, they genuinely want it too. This happened early for us, and rather than shrug it off, we decided to make it a company.
We don't advocate everyone turn their hobbies into companies, we are just saying it seemed like the right thing to do for us. We started simple with the goal of being a real business people could rely on. It's refreshing to us that this resonated with so many of you in a world where free apps fill the world.
Then something else happened: customers wanted more. This has driven us to further develop, and the results have been amazing. When we first converted our beta customers to actual customers (way before our big launch in October), we didn't even have SMS support. Now, in part thanks to feedback from our growing customer base, we have not only added SMS and simple UI features, but we overhauled our entire site and have even more features planned.
The conventional wisdom in business is to never stop innovating. What surprised us was how much you would be an active part of the process. Thank you. Let's build an even better Phone Janitor as we go.
